Wild harvested Inonotus obliquus (also known as “clinker polypore,” “cinder conk,” and “birch canker polypore”) is a sterile conk parasitic on birch and other trees. It looks like burnt charcoal, is dark (due to plentiful melanin), dense/woody and has an earthy, and slightly bitter taste. It has a wide range of traditional and medicinal applications. As an adaptogen, studies suggest that chaga mushrooms have several health-promoting, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties.
PRECAUTIONS: Consuming chaga could cause hypoglycemia, or a serious drop in blood sugar. Chaga may also interfere with blood clotting. Therefore, those with bleeding disorders should avoid it, and anyone taking blood thinning medication should use it with caution.
