Szechuan pepper (Zanthoxylum similans/ bungeanum) is unique in that it is not hot or pungent like black peppercorn. Szechuan peppercorn is actually in the ctirus family and not the pepper family. It creates a tingly numbness in the mouth and has a lemon aftertaste. Some varieties may have a licorice aftertaste.
